My name is Nico Garza. I am the owner of CODA Communications. I grew up with Deaf parents and a Deaf sibling. This means that I am a CODA, a child of Deaf adults. I learned to sign early in life and communicated with it regularly at home. I interpreted for my family members and tutored my sibling all through school. This is where I grew my passion for Deaf education.
Before I earned my authorization as an educational interpreter, I worked as a substitute interpreter in a high school and later as a signing paraprofessional at multiple grade levels. I then worked for Denver Math Fellows, where I taught the fundamentals and basics of middle school mathematics. In both of these jobs I spent my time mainly tutoring individual students and small groups.
I graduated from Dalton State College with a Bachelor's degree in English and from Front Range Community College with an Associate's in Applied Sciences in Interpreter Preparation. I have worked as an interpreter in elementary schools and in video relay settings for five years. I suppose you could say much of my life has been spent in interpreting and tutoring!
I enjoy reading, making pizza, video games, and toy collecting when I can get some free time.Â
